WHAT DOES COUNSELLING INVOLVE?
The BACP definition of counselling
"Counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having, distress they may be experiencing or perhaps their dissatisfaction with life, or loss of a sense of direction and purpose."
With my clients I aim to help them explore their problems, and perhaps see them in alternative ways. Together we look at possibilities for change and I support them in their decisions. If I have information that I feel will be helpful to them, I offer this as an aid, but do not tell them what to do.
I generally use a cognitive behavioural model, but also work integratively. With psychosexual clients I use a psycho-educational approach which at times can feel a little more directive than general counselling.
